Paint Decorated Dome Top Trunk, Folk Art
By a yet to be identified Southern New Hampshire muralist/decorative painter
Early 19th Century - SOLD

Antique Paint Decorated Dome Top Trunk, Early 19th Century, angle view

Characteristically feathered black and green trees and the minimalistic use of color against a faint salmon ground (faded to whitish-gray) are closely related to a group of boxes, a fireboard, and several wall murals in New Hampshire executed by a yet to be identified artist.

This hand in the past has been attributed to Rufus Porter; however, recent research and cataloging reassigns the hand to that of an unidentified artist. (The trees are not congruent to any rendered by Porter within his signed works)

A similarly decorated box is found within The Howard and Jean Lipman Collection of Important American Folk Art and Painted Furniture, Sotheby’s, lot 97. For additional reference please see, Rufus Porter Rediscovered by Jean Lipman, pages 116 and 117; decorated wall of Bidwell Tavern, Langdon, New Hampshire. The box and surface remain in generally excellent original condition with only minor losses and imperfections consistent with age and use. (H: 9”, W: 20.25”, D: 11.5”)
