Additional Information: Typical tack and peg construction, original paint…appears to
be a dark blue now oxidized and very dark. The name DAVID LAWRENCE is scratch
carved in one side, the other side displays a similarly carved star.

Material: Oak and pine, leather sling straps, copper rosehead tacks
Condition: Very good, Woodchip loss on front side as depicted, caused by shrinkage
against wood peg. Scratch-carved initials on backside: “SD” …black over red paint.
Additional Information: Rosehead tack and peg construction, intact sling straps.
“M.S.” painted over original “U.S.” likely right after the War of 1812. Canteen is maker
signed; E. BURR, a fourth-generation box-maker. Elisha Burr (1776-1863) of Hingham,
Massachusetts.

Pepperrell, Massachusetts Date/Period: Circa 1812, Historic Second Paint Likely Circa 1835 - SOLD

Material: Pine, probably oak bentwood sides, polychrome
Condition: Very good with typical scattered paint losses commensurate with age and
use. Retains one leather sling strap.
Additional Information: Tack and peg construction. Working period black over blue
paint…red painted border encircling “P.G”.) The Prescott Guards, an independent militia
company organized in 1819 A.K.A. the Pepperell Light Infantry. The Prescott Guards
honored a famous Revolutionary War hero Colonel William Prescott from Pepperrell
who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Bill Guthman had a “PG” example in his collection that was sold by Northeast Auction
in 2006. We know of at least one other sold by a well-respected dealer of militaria.
