Early 18th Century Tabletop Box, Bible Box, Original Red
New England, circa 1700-1730
Hard yellow pine, slide lid of till is poplar
A Bible box in original red paint having a thumb-molded overhanging rectangular batten
lid [missing one batten] hung from original snipe hinges opening to a fitted box interior.
The interior features a partitioned till with sliding lid. Base moldings to front and sides
long gone, so long that the witness shadow has developed a rich patina; it displays well.
Original lock remains intact. Generally, very good condition commensurate with age and
use; wear to lid at proper right front; ubiquitous shrinkage crack to top…not offensive,
has character. (Height: 9.75"; width: 26.75"; depth: 14.25")
