Robert Stetson settled on the river in 1634 receiving a 100-acre land grant from the Crown
of England. His sons Thomas and Samuel established a shipyard in 1660; three generations
of Stetsons worked the shipyard before selling to Nathaniel Church, a shipbuilder from
upstream. The farm passed down through subsequent generations before being sold to
Michael Ford, another shipbuilder. Three generations of the Ford family worked the land
and shipyard before the property was sold to the Morton family in which the half hull
descended. Our consignor purchased the half hull directly from the Morton family. (Today
184 acres is known as Stetson Meadows Conservation Land.)
