Bellows, Carved Walnut Fireplace Bellows, Portrait of George Washington
Anonymous, 19th Century
Long handles, brass tacks and nozzle
Fire Screen, Queen Anne Pole Screen,
Mahogany, Embroidered Floral Panel
Possibly American, Circa 1760
A true carved acorn finial surmounts the pole which continues to the turned standard;
the whole resting on cabriole legs terminating with scarcely encountered egg and rat
claw feet. The embroidered floral panel, basket resting on table is worked in wool
threads on a linen ground; backed with silk. Period repair to very-top of standard
where pole is received; small perfectly fitted half-inch brass collar [mahoganized]
was fitted and secured with screws to insure the integrity of a tight and perfectly
aligned short-fissure. The pole screen lived in this writer’s office for two weeks
with me never noticing this clever repair. There are a few imperfections to embroidery.
(Height: 49.5"; screen: 22" x 18")
