Pair, Windsor Side Chairs with Fabulous Wrought Iron Make-Do Repairs
New England
Date/Period: Circa 1810

1120-87_main

Measurement: Height: 34.75"; seat height: 16"; width: 13.75"; depth: 15.5"

Material: Maple

Condition: Very good, old refinish

Additional Information: We assume that a post tenon was compromised, perhaps two
or more…we do not know…could be that the posts shrunk; we have never seen another
example or anything similar. There are four handwrought brackets beautifully
conforming to end of tablets then continuing to post. The shaping, planishing and color
of iron are wonderful. Step-down tablets above baluster and ring turned posts centering
seven spindles above plank seat raised on bamboo-turned legs joining bulbus “H”
stretchers.

Side Chair, Chippendale, Likely by Eliphalet Chapin
East Windsor, Connecticut
A most successful statement of American Chippendale. (Dean Fales)
Date/Period: 1775-1785 - SOLD

621-164_main

Measurement: Height: 38.75"; seat height: 18"; width: 22.5"; depth: 17.5"

Material: Cherry; white pine

Condition: Excellent

Additional Information: “One of the handsomest Chapin-type splats” as published on
page 58 of The Furniture of Historic Deerfield by Dean A. Fales Jr. …Or, as written
in American Furniture At Chipstone by Rodriquez Roque on page 130 describing a
nearly identical chair the author states “the most intricate type of splat found on Chapin
chairs”.

Stylistically, the form and details of construction are identical to other known Chapin
side chairs made of cherry with Connecticut histories; they are very similar to chairs
made in Philadelphia where Chapin apprenticed for four years. A Masterful
interpretation emphasizing form and reducing ornament to a minimum. (Roque)
