", Historical New Hampshire periodical (Spring/Summer 1977).

Additional Information: Attributed to James Holsey Whitcomb, a deaf-mute
of Hancock, New Hampshire. As depicted, a delightful work; double hollow-cut
[face and left shoulder]; hair, collar, buttons, and vest detailed with
watercolor. Note the separate hollow-cut jacket lapel.

The Subject: Identified on the backboard in period script, “Daniel Gordon
Atwood, born April 12, 1812, Bedford, NH son of David Atwood and Mary Bell,
died at Bedford, November 22, 1893.” (Daniel made ox-yokes with his father.

The Artist: Whitcomb was a deaf New Hampshire artist who graduated in one of
the first classes of the American Asylum in Hartford, Connecticut; one of the
first New Hampshire students to attend at state expense. The Asylum was founded
to educate deaf-mutes and the New Hampshire legislature appropriated scholarship
money that enabled Whitcomb's parents to send the young boy for education.
Whitcomb graduated alongside other deaf artists such as Augustus
Fuller and William Niblo, Jr.
