Additional Information: Gassner was an itinerant portraitist, his route included central
Massachusetts, Vermont, and the Massachusetts – Rhode Island coasts. The artist was
capable of painting in an academic tradition or the simple folk art style.
Canvas Back Mark: The verso of one canvas displays a back mark common to Gassner’s
works; Hollis and Wheeler were located as stated below from 1843 to 1849.

uncomplicated. The neatly coifed lady with tendrils of falling hair wears large and small
tortoise shell combs; a shear lace ruffle collar and triple necklace of red beads
complementing her blue dress. The gentleman with cock’s comb hairdo wears a high
collared coat and cravat with the faded red vest smartly outlining the Masonic compass
pin. Both images within oval bands centered by scalloped motif with flourishes of red.
The lady centers wisps of green foliage with the gentleman centering a light blue cloud
at his mid-section.
