Delft Posset Pot
Early 18th Century
English

Polychrome pear-shape posset pot with dome lid, flared rim, and mushroom finial; foliate decoration around the rim and wide strap handles terminating in tight scrolls. An old family inscription on the inside of the lid reads "BRISTOL / DELFT / CIRCA / 1730 / VAN ALLEN family / FisH Kill / NY" [sic].
There is old restoration to the cover rim and some minor frittering. Dimensions: 9".

The interior has two decorative borders of floral and diaper panels enclosing the inscription "To Granby the Brave". The exterior painted in blue with a Chinese fence surmounted and flanked by trailing floral and foliate branches. A bowl with the same inscription is illustrated by Michael Archer, Delftware (2013), F 33, page 257. John Manners, Marquis of Granby, was commander in chief of the British contingent in the Seven Years War. He led a brilliant charge of the British cavalry at Warburg in 1760. The French were heavily defeated with the loss of 1500 men. (H: 3.75"; diameter: 9")
