Pottery was first produced in Choisy-le-Roi in 1804. By 1836, Louis Boulenger 0was managing thee factory; he was succeeded by his son Hippolyte Boulenger in 1863. This wonderful majolica piece is stamped ‘Choisy le Roi’ with the letters HB (presumably for Hippolyte Boulenger.) Rarity, subject matter, quality, and condition are terrific…

Soft Paste Porcelain, painted with enamels and picked out in gold
Modeled by Pierre Stephan, the standing figure of radical, rabble-rouser depicted with right hand resting on pedestal with dark pink mantle thrown over left shoulder; scroll inscribed MAGNA CARTA and BILL OF RIGHTS on a column at his right hand, inscribed INo WILKS, a putto with raised arm holding stick with Liberty Cap, also a book inscribed LOCK on GOVT, on a scroll molded base. The figure is very good with typical small losses to gilt shoe and stocking ribbons; other superbly executed repairs. (Dimensions: 12” H.)

Condition: Condition is good, commensurate with age, medium, and use; One jar
displays a crack to rim where a 1.5 by .5-inch separated and is now glued; other
hairlines. The second jar which is slightly taller has no issues.
Additional Information: Full frontal decoration in colorful glazes; lion rampant, face
mask, urn of foliage and more.
