Verse translated from Dutch to the best of our ability:
Sobald dein ton das ohr bestreichet wird selbst die grauamkeit erweichet
Music preiß aller freyen Kräfte
die stets mein geist sein labsal nent
ob manches schwächer Hirn gespinste
dir gleich nicht seinen beifal gönt
As soon as your sound has touched the ear
even the cruelty softens
Music press all free forces
which my mind calls its refreshment
whether some weaker brains
do not grant you its approval

Snuff Box, Pressed Horn, Mourning, Denis Auguste Affre (1793 to 1848)
French
Circa 1840s
Priest, professor, appointed Arch Bishop of Paris in 1840; he was not involved in politics as he was dedicated to pastoral endeavors; he was killed during the Insurrection of 1848. He did not heed the warning General Louis Eugene Cavaignac, presenting himself at the entrance to the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, with green branch as sign of peace. He had spoken only a few words, when shots rang-out; the insurgents thinking they were betrayed, opened fire wounding the archbishop who was struck by a stray bullet. He died on 27 June.
The National Assembly of France declared their tremendous sorrow in a decree; a public funeral on 7 July was one of the most moving assemblies of the period. Affre Archev of Paris

language appears to be a German - Northern Dutch dialect.
