Possibly Shaker, probably New England… Steam-bent ash hoops with locked lap joints, maple staves, wooden bail, elegant bentwood handle, excellent original surface. Exceptional cooperage.
The wooden locked-lapped hoops are very well executed. The long, tapered scarf joints are carefully fitted and remarkably uniform. This type of hoop construction is one of the best-known characteristics of nineteenth-century Shaker buckets and tubs. The thin steam-bent bail is elegant and finely made. It has the lightness and precision one expects from Shaker work rather than the heavier handles often found on utilitarian farm buckets. The ears are flat, rectangular, and simply shaped with restrained curves. While they are somewhat heavier than those on some Mount Lebanon examples, they still exhibit the functional simplicity associated with Shaker design. Everything appears extremely regular; evenly spaced staves, very clean croze work, carefully fitted bottom,
And uniform hoop tension. The workmanship is first-rate.
