Calhoun sold pistols and fancy goods in Nashville. Walnut stock, checkering within line engraved borders, all metal is pewter gray, the 2.5-inche barrel [3-inches with breech] shows scattered yet smooth and light pitting; action is tight and smooth. The breach displays the legend assigned to the 1835-1837 period [and sometimes later]; DERINGER above PHILADEL’A, also the “P” and sunburst marks are found on the breech. The barrel flat also marked [indiscernible] FOR over W.H. Calhoun over AGENT over NASHVILLE TENN. All silver furniture…buttcap, forend cap, barrel key escutcheons; vacant shield shape thumbpiece and the engraved trigger guard with pineapple finial and long tang. There are minor unobtrusive imperfections consistent with age and use; a few tight fissures have been attended to; minor wood fill that did not notice until very close inspection…nonetheless, a very nice example with great history.
