Theodore A. Barton's Civil War Autograph Book


Book contains 273 autographs, including some clipped signature such as A. Lincoln and others, mostly of Civil War Soldiers Barton encountered during his Civil War military career, later throughout his membership in the GAR and again with his involvements in the Sons of Veterens. Barton, although originally from Massachusetts, moved to Rhode Island after the war and became a successful businessman. He is credited as a founder of the Rhode Island G.A.R., and again the Rhode Island S.of V.

Residence New Bedford MA; a 21 year-old Clerk.

Enlisted on 9/18/1862 as a Qtr Master Serg.

On 10/15/1862 he mustered into Field & Staff MA 3rd Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 6/26/1863 at Camp Hooker, Lakeville, MA

On 8/25/1863 he was commissioned into Unassigned MA 2nd Heavy Artillery
He was discharged for promotion on 10/16/1863

On 10/19/1863 he was commissioned into Field & Staff MA 58th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 7/14/1865 at Washington, DC

Promotions:
* 2nd Lieut 8/25/1863 (As of 2nd MA HA)
* 1st Lieut 10/19/1863 (1st Lieut & Quartermaster as of 58th MA Infantry)

Other Information:
died 1/24/1905 in Providence, RI

After the War he lived in Providence, RI

"......the first "Division" (Department) or state Commander of the RI Division of the SofV was Theodore A. Barton, Department Commander 1886, of the RI Department GAR. He was Commander of both Orders in 1886, when RI received its Provisional Charter from the National SofV, and served a 2nd term as Provisional Commander of the RI Division SofV in 1887. On Jan. 21, 1888, RI received its Permanent Division (Department) Charter & Comrade/Brother Barton was elected SofV Division Commander in 1888 & again in 1889. Barton (a GAR man) was unquestionably the founder of the RI Department SUVCW.
