An Exceptional Painted and Paint Decorated Box
Delicate stylized stencil and free hand decoration...
geometric and floral motifs
Vermont
Circa 1810 - SOLD

Remaining in a high state of originality...the maker constructed the box of white pine employing competent yet simple rabbet construction. The decoration against a brown ground is off-white, red, black and teal. The rebated iron hinges are without compromise with the brass handle, escutcheon and what remains of the hasp appearing to be original. We know of another Vermont box by the same hand with similar decoration, circa 1808; lined with newspaper reading, 'Vermont, Burlington, May 18, 1808,' and extract from a letter, 'Windsor, May 8, 1808.' Also, See American Painted Furniture, 1660-1880 by Dean A. Fales, Jr. and Robert Bishop, pg. 212, #344 for an almost identical example. (Width: 17.75-inches; depth: 9-inches; height: 8 3/8-inches.)
