Figured maple



Made by D Denise in 1880 at the age of 81, the year of his death. He was born in 1799 in Monmouth, NJ.
He carved and personalized wooden scoops as keepsakes for family and friends. This scoop was made for Mrs. E. Everett of Palmyra, NY, and remains in nice condition.

Pair of portraits, one of a young woman in a bejeweled powdered wig, and wearing a fur cloak and a second of a young man in a white uniform jacket with a red stand collar and two large badges on the front, each portrait is signed "M *Vander Taelen /* Van der Taelen /* Vander Faelen," (the lettering is open to interpretation) the paintings are housed in convex carved ebonized frames backed with paper printed in Latin, NW Europe, probably Netherlands.
(4 ½-inches x 4 ½-inches framed, 1 ½-inches diameter view.)

The shaped top-rail is received by the turned stiles centering four tapered spindles that pierce the rail and the shaped plank seat which is raised on incised legs joined by turned box stretcher.
