Highboy Vignette, with Details of Each Piece


Boy Holding A Bible

Circa 1835
Attributed to Samuel P. Howes (1806 -1881)

In this portrait the boy wears a green skeleton suit and is holding a bible with a red cover. The painting is attributed to Massachusetts artist Samuel P. Howes There is noticeable craquelure over the surface except along the edges (which were covered by the original frame) and two small patches on the reverse with correspondingly small spots of in-painting on the background. The view area is approximately 21.25-inches by 26.5-inches, overall size framed is 27.25-inches by 32.25-inches. Literature:

The upper section having a flat top with a boldly molded cornice over five lip-molded long drawers. The lower section with two conforming long lip-molded drawers...the drawer molded to simulate three short drawers; over a triple arcade cupids-bow shaped apron similarly matched single arcade on sides. The case is raised on cabriole legs ending in beautiful pad feet. Traces or red resin stain; two lip corners are restored otherwise all else fine.
Height: 76.5-inches; width: 40-inches; depth: 21-inches.

The gentleman is seated with his library. Minor restoration to the canvas. The sight size measures 19 by 22-inches; add 2-inches for the frame.
