Charles C. Hoffman (1821-1882)
Daniel B. Lorah's Farm
Heidleberg Township
Berks Co. Penna
1872 from the Southside Oil On Canvas
Pennsylvania
Circa 1870 - SOLD
The artist was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States at the age of 40. Between 1865 and 1881 he painted a number of highly detailed large landscape views, which he painted during periods of commitment for intemperance. The artist is known for his highly prized and much sought after depictions of alms houses in Berks, Montgomery and Schuylkill Counties of Pennsylvania.
Typical of Hoffman's works there is significant re-touch following the craquelure pattern throughout. (The artist canvas preparation there is thin over-paint over a now restored long "L" shaped tear along the right side; the tear ran horizontally and vertically.
