Fraktur
Attributed to Samuel Bentz (1792-1850)
The Mount Pleasant Artist (Lancaster County, PA)
Inscribed for "Amos Good / [son of Henry Good. / and his Wife Ann. / a born Stirk] was born / february 8th in the year / of our Lord 1836."
Although only one signed work by Samuel Bentz is known, his singular style is a signature in its own right. Frequently used favorite motifs are red and black spheres surmounting stylized urns or plinths and heavy use of brown, tan, orange and black; frequently, Bentz also added a clock to his birth records. Other notable features of Bentz's Fraktur are limited text and enclosing parent's names within brackets.
The paper is toned and lightly creased...colors and pen work remain quite vivid.
Not distracting but must be noted; barely visible 1.75-inch vertical crack in outermost section of name block with other partial paper cracks within creases that have been professionally stabilized and do not distract. (Sight size: 7 3/8 x 9.25-inches.)
