Portrait of Henry Wight Diman (1801-1838) (aka Henry Wight Dimond) of Bristol, RI; painted on board by successful Massachusetts portrait artist Cephas Thompson (1775 - 1856) of Middleborough, Massachusetts. The work is branded "C.THOMPSON" in lower left and is mounted within a period carved, gesso and gilt frame; no apparent damage or restoration. The Diman family was of French Huguenot origin that settled on Long Island, NY eventually moving to Rhode Island. The family name was spelled Diamond or Diament until 1750 when seventh generation Bristol, Rhode Island family members changed the spelling to Diman. For more than two hundred years the family figured prominently in many aspects of Rhode Island and international history. The artists work is represented within the collections of the Boston Athenaeum Library, Maryland Historical Society, the Abby A. Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and The National Portrait Gallery; New York Historical Society and The Newark Museum. Thompson was also well known in the South where he spent many winter seasons. Records show that he was in Baltimore in 1804, Charleston in 1804, 1818, and 1822, in Richmond in 1809-1810, and in New Orleans in 1816.

The tall back with serpentine crest rail with center shell and rolled volutes above the molded out-swept stiles centered by pierced splats above the trapezoidal seat set within molded through tenoned frame raised on cabriole legs; front legs with claw and ball feet. (Height: 39.5 inches; seat height: 18 inches; width: 22 inches; depth: 17.25 inches.)

Octagonal George III Silver Teapot and Footed Undertray

Ivory handle, domed lid with ivory pineapple finial, chased decoration on teapot and stand. London 1787-88 hallmarks and "BM" with a pellet between letters. Footed undertray in excellent condition; teapot has four small but obvious dimples on side and old repair to octagonal spout.
