A GREEN AND WHITE PAINTED WRITING-ARM
WINDSOR CHAIR
New England, Possibly Vermont
Circa 1790-1810 - SOLD
The flat angle of the writing paddle, the location of the drawer underneath the seat and the sharply raked legs of this chair contribute to the successful integration and balance of elements in its design. It exhibits a turning pattern found throughout New England; the location of the drawer underneath the seat, while unusual, can be seen on a comb-back from the CT-Rhode Island area, illustrated in Evans, American Windsor Furniture, p. 41, fig. 1.8. Evans indicates that the writing-arm form remained uncommon Northern New England; the regional attribution to Vermont, assigned by Charles Santore, may indicate a history of ownership in that part of the country, now unknown.
