OUTSTANDING and RARE
From a small extant group...an expressive large
English Mid-Drip Trumpet Candlestick
Circa 1650
A robust statement-generous proportion, exquisite form, balance and fluidity
This enormous candlestick being ten-inches in height on a nearly eight-inch base has a wide socket-rim that is angled downward above the slightly flaring upper shaft gently tapering to the pronounced molding...the molding, a ridged-knop; is pleasing to the eye and practical for carrying. The shaft beneath the molding again flaring before spreading into the generous drip-tray. The brass tang remains without compromise. Underneath the slightly upswept drip-tray, the lower shaft gradually and gently sloping to the flaring base on short step. The stick remains in generally excellent condition having only the expected minor evidence of time...the usual dings, nicks and a few short tight fissures within the drip-tray. As depicted, there is a very small bite on the tray edge...all else fine. The underside shows very good color, patina and tool marks.
Dimensions: 10-inches in height; base diameter of 7 7/8-inches

Extremely Rare and Large
Henry the Eighth Candle Stick
Chalice and Paten
English Tudor
16th Century
This stick is a variant of a small group of extant sixteenth century English candlesticks...chalice and paten or Tudor candlesticks. The acorn knop on the shaft is unique; the shaft and base conform to the design traditions of the group. It is important to note that the English Tudor sticks do not have pierced sockets as found on the Continental candlesticks of the same period. The pierced holes on this stick are probably hundreds of years old, however, not original to the sockets. The candlestick was cast in three parts: shaft, shallow dish at the base of the shaft, and base. The shaft extends through the dish into the base and is attached to the base by peening; then finished turned. There are only a few of these extremely sophisticated Tudor candlesticks extant. They are of excellent quality; made of superior brass and highly finished.
There are only 25 or 30 larger examples known, all found in England...this fine example is more diminutive than the others which average 10-14-inches. This examples stands at just over 8-inches; base diameter: 5-inches. Excellent original condition, color and patina.
