Painted Six Board Chest
Early American Eagle Decoration
Circa 1810

The overhanging rectangular lid with applied molding over a conforming dovetailed case on a similarly molded base. The chest retains an old or original red painted surface with a terrific dry patina. Of special interest and importance is the red, white and blue oval centered by the early style American eagle with shield that is painted on the upper fascia of the chest; shield contains a heart with crossed keys. The interior of the dovetailed box is fitted with an interesting sliding till/storage box arrangement and a mortised lid support that folds into the side board. A copy of a note included with the chest says it was the property of Captain Henry Crary (1782 - ) of Columbus, NY who "followed the sea from 1800 to 1812."
