Firearms Vignette, with Details of Each Piece

Cased Pair of French & Indian War Pistols
In North American Leather-Bound Casing
By I. Buckmaster...working circa 1730-1763
London

Joseph Buckmaster is listed as working in London 1730-1763; during 1746 through 1763 he worked for The Hudson's Bay Company. It is wonderful to find single surviving examples of this British export quality; dating to the 1740-1760 period...finding a true matched pair is important and exciting.
The pistol has gilt brass barrels and brass lock plates, trigger guards, sideplates, butt plate, thumb pieces and rammer ferrules. Only the lock parts and tang are steel. The guns are .69 caliber with swamped round barrels being 7.5-inches in length. They are proofed and cartouched; London proofs and the heart over "IB" mark of Joseph Buckmaster. Full stocks with butt caps having long engraved tangs; long narrow pointed locks with simple engraving and no bridle for frizzen; fancy pierced and engraved sideplates. All furniture is lightly and plainly engraved with appropriate smooth surface wear. The pistols are 13-inches long overall with both ramrods being likely appropriate replacements, however, the horn tips and steel worms are appropriately correct. The forend stock of one of these pistols has been restored; wood is expertly replaced 3-inches back from the muzzle to just ahead of the swell. One frizzen is replaced; both hammers appear to be old replacements or repairs. The hammers are of the quality that one could expect from a colonial smith and may indeed be of colonial vintage.
The case is a colonial type case, sufficient for use on the frontier before and during the French & Indian Wars. The wood case is covered in leather and decorated with dozens of brass tacks; leather is well worn, but still supple with no tears. The brass lockplate has a working key. The interior partitions and lid are lined in green worsted cloth. The case contains lead balls, a piece of sheet lead, and a combination tool, spare flints, and a small powder horn.
The North American casing is a great find.

D.H. Hilliard Long Barrel Underhammer Pistol
This example with not often found...Remington Barrel
Cornish, New Hampshire

This example with serial number 88 is .36 caliber percussion with a 12-inch octagonal barrel that is marked "135" on muzzle and "2 - 6 5/8" under barrel. The original hooded front sight remains, as does the original peep rear sight. It is maker signed on top flat. There is a nice single leaf design factory engraved onto the top strap; 20% blue on top strap; 80% blue on rear sight, barrel is nice gray brown with no pitting and excellent metal surfaces. The cherry stock is excellent and has no varnish, perhaps oil finish only. There are 3 one-quarter inch diameter wood plugs in the back of the grip; probably at one time the gun had a non-factory stock. The iron trigger guard has traces of blue. As was customary when a maker used a high quality barrel from a respected source, he left the barrel makers name on the barrel to demonstrate the quality of the firearm. In this case the barrel maker was E. Remington of Ilion NY. The gun is complete except for one screw missing from the trigger plate.

Beautiful Cannon-Barrel Flintlock Pistol
With silver wire inlay...

This lovely box-lock flintlock pistol has a brass cannon barrel, brass frame and wonderful rounded slab grips with silver wire inlay. The trigger guard and lock plate are iron. This pistol is unsigned and un-proofed. A number "0019733" is engraved on the lower tang, aft of the trigger guard. This could be a European registration number, a museum number or a collector's number. The 5.5 inch round barrel continually expands from breech to muzzle. The patina on the brass is even and medium in color. The iron parts are blued and show strong traces of color. The action is crisp and the gun shows little if any sign of use. There are a few places sans silver wire; see pictures. The overall length is 10.25 inches.
