Portrait Of Seated Gentleman
On balcony before vista...
Attributed to Orlando Hand Bears (1811-1858)
Sag Harbor, Long Island
Oil on canvas
- SOLD
Portrait of a man seated in an upholstered chair on a balcony; clouds, foliage and mountains looming behind him with a tranquil New England common in the distance. The work remains in excellent original condition and is mounted with a gilt cove molded frame. The artist was a Sag Harbor, Long Island native who attempted to capitalize on the prosperity of eastern Long Island and coastal Connecticut during the early nineteenth century, generated by the areas successful whaling industry. Bears may have studied and painted with Hubbard Fordham also of Sag Harbor and a relative; Bears' painted ship captains, merchants and their families. The very few signed and dated Bears' portraits date from the mid to late 1830's. Bears' career as an artist was short-lived whereas he died at the young age of 40 at Sag Harbor.
