Paint Decorated Blanket Chest
Tuscarawas or Wayne County, Ohio
Circa 1870, poplar, painted and grained

This work by an unknown ornamenter was found in the above-mentioned county. The yellow ground with brown glaze was carefully scuddled in a rhythmic pattern on the front, top and sides resembling a woven coverlet. The lid with applied molding hangs from original iron butt hinges and is painted green; the base molding is also green. The dovetail-constructed case is raised on bell-shaped feet terminating in tall delicate spikes that are mortised into blocks. In fine original condition with a width of 43-inches; depth: 20-inches; height: 25-inches.

Literature: American Painted Furniture by Cynthia Schaffner and Susan Klien; page 176, figure 8.4.

Price: $9,250
