Candle Stand Vignette, with Details of Each Piece
Back row:
A Period Queen Anne Candle Stand
New England, Maple
In 19th century lipstick-red paint... - SOLD
Very old paint; great color and country attitude.
In good functional condition with honest and typical "use" wear such as cracks in the shaft where the feet are "let in" and wear to feet. Mid nineteenth century nails were added to strengthen feet before the table was pained. None of these "in use" make-do fixes distract for those of us looking for honest country furniture without pretense. (Height: 27.25-inches; top measures 13.25 by 13.75-inches.)
Federal Oval Top Candle-Stand
High tapering spider legs...in old surface
Massachusetts or New Hampshire
Entirely made of apple wood
Circa 1800-1810
The thinner than usual figured top is attached to a chamfered and molded cleat through which the urn turned pedestal is mortised; the legs of this tall graceful tripod base dovetail into the pedestal. The overall snappy design is light and airy. (Height 29-inches; top measures 13.25 by 21 by .5-inches.)
Price: $8,250
Octagonal Top Cherry Candle Stand
Probably Massachusetts
In old, probably original, Spanish brown paint
Circa 1790-1810
The octagonal top raised on gently swelled pedestal with urn turning; the cabriole legs with integral shaped brackets dovetail into the pedestal. In very good original condition; footpads are worn. (Height: 26.75-inches; top measures 13.5 by 13.5 on the square.)
Price: $5,700
Front row:
Maple Candle Stand
Original red surface
Massachusetts
Circa 1800 - SOLD
Rarely in country furniture do we find proportion, style and red pigment in harmony...the thin molded top is screwed to the sharply chamfered rectangular block that receives the graceful turned and tapered pillar with a fine urn above compressed ball. The legs are fitted into the pillar by dovetail joints; a sheet-iron brace is nailed to the underside of each of the well-arched legs ending in a ridged pad foot. This outstanding country table appears to retain its original resin base surface tinted with red pigment; the uniformity of color, patina and dryness is stellar. The top has "in-use" surface losses, all else fine. (Top measures 15.25 by 16.25-inches.
Molded Octagonal Top Maple Table
New England
Circa 1720-1740 - SOLD
The top of this table is secured by a cleat; the turned baluster post is socketed wedged and pinned into the cleat. The post is again socketed into the notched and lapped cruciform base. Considering the height of 21.5-inches...the post may have been slightly reduced at the cleat early in its life. (The top of this attractive table measures 9.25 by 9-inches; base measures 12-inches.)
Queen Anne Candle Stand
Probably Connecticut
Red stain...old surface
Compared to the Chapin shop tradition and in good surface, this cherry table having nearly square top with rounded corners that rests on a beautifully turned baluster column raised on cabriole legs terminating with pad feet. (Height: 26-inches; top: 15 by 16-inches.)
Price: $3,600
