Featuring Nine Shell Carvings

Circa 1760-1770

A Newport Rhode Island carved cherry slant-lid desk with block and shell carved interior. The dovetailed top with rectangular slant-lid that opens to a fitted interior centered by a concave blocked prospect door opening to three drawers...prospect door headed by a eight-lobed shell with wavy scribed outline and short scrolling tendrils flanked on each side by three pigeonholes, each crested by a small drawer with six-lobed shell carving having wavy scribed outline...the cubbies above a single blocked drawer; further flanked by a stack of three concave blocked drawers, the top one with conforming shell carving; all on a conforming molding atop the writing surface. The case with four long graduated drawers, each with overlapping thumb-molded edge is raised on a molded base having typical Newport style ogee-bracket feet. This attractive desk remains in superb condition with period brasses that may be original.
Material: Cherry primary wood; Pine and chestnut secondary wood.
Dimensions: height: 44-inches; width: 39.5-inches; depth: 20.5-inches; writing height: 32-inches.

1814-1832

Massive Record book, leather covered on rag page, hundreds of pages, thousands of entries for Berwick, S. Berwick, N. Berwick, etc., covering every land and property holder, assessing Poll and Property valuations. An immensely valuable primary resource for the early Berwick houses and settlers. Large and heavy, probably expensive to ship. Extremely rare primary document.

Chippendale Mahogany Side Chair
Massachusetts, probably Boston
Circa 1775

This mahogany side chair with a serpentine crest ending in molded scrolled terminals above the openwork pierced splat with c-scrolls; above a maple slip seat frame set into the molded squared seat frame. The front legs and raking back legs with molded outside and inside edges are joined by side and medial molded stretchers and a turned back stretcher. Retains an old finish with a fine patina. (Height: 38-inches; seat height: 18-inches; seat with at front: 21-inches; depth: 21-inches.)
