Pair Of Carved And Painted
Native American Figures
From the world famous circus wagon tableau-
The United States

Circa 1875 - SOLD

The circus wagon United States is one of the most magnificent examples of circus carving, replete with symbols of the American spirit. 1

"The bandwagon titled United States is probably the finest circus wagon in existence." The central panel displays the Goddess of Liberty flanked by two Indians and surmounted by the American eagle. 2

The United States bandwagon is now part of the renowned Circus World Museum's collection at Baraboo, Wisconsin; the magnificent wagon was built for the Ringling Brothers-World's Greatest Shows in 1903 by the Bode Wagon Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The wagon was paraded through the 1919 consolidation of the Ringling show with the Barnum and Bailey show. When the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus stopped its daily street parades about 1920, the wagon went into storage in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The wagon remained at the Bridgeport, Connecticut winter storage facility until 1927 when it was moved to the new Sarasota, Florida winter facility. By 1950 the wagon had greatly deteriorated with only a few original carvings including this pair of Indians being rescued. Circus World Museum completely rebuilt the grand bandwagon restoring its original breathtaking beauty. (The pair of Indians surfaced after the restoration was completed.)

The surface appears to be original with only minor period "in-use" restoration.
There are only small areas of loss. It appears that there is a single layer of heavy enamel. The figures are mounted on plywood that looks to be original; they are ready to hang. (Height: 60 inches; Width: 21.75 inches; Depth: 5 inches.)

1. Excerpt from Treasury Of American Design And Antiques. (Page 597.)

2. American Folk Art in Wood, Metal and Stone by Jean Lipman, page 107; plate 91.
