Third Quarter-19th Century
Anonymous

A full bodied depiction of power, strength, speed and motion displaying a flowing mane and tail...cast iron head; all else copper. This example with beautiful untouched naturally oxidized surface is weathered to a beautiful verdigris; the iron head has a smooth brown evenly pitted surface. Rare Painted Roller Blind
Found In NYS
Window Shade
Circa 1850-1860
An idyllic scene with romantic figures in foreground...

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries artworks were not only hung on walls...in some homes window frames surrounded dramatic landscapes and exotic scenery vividly painted on cloth and/or paper roller shades. Bright sunlight backlit these painted window treatments creating a dominant aesthetic. During the hours of darkness, artificial light used within the room illuminated the dramatic window shade pictures for the pleasure of passers-by...

Shades were hand-painted by individual artists until the mid-nineteenth century when popularity demanded increased-production. Due to market demand shops were established with some employing many artists; by 1850 they were made affordable to the average-income household.

Roller blinds were the most common window covering of the nineteenth century-with spring operated blinds being available during the 1830's. Production of factory made spring rollers began circa 1858.

During the mid-nineteenth century, landscapes were in-favor, especially idyllic, romantic scenes of Europe. This trend is consistent with Americans following European tastes. (Length: 85-inches; width: 41.25-inches.)
