Masonic Register
Gouache, Pencil, and Pen

On textured paper this Master Mason degree features numerous Masonic symbols including the Eye of God, mosaic pavement and columns of Solomon's Temple, broken column, lambs, Charity, etc. The images are done in pencil and colored with gouache, some lettering is done in pen and ink. There are no names or dates. There are no tears, the paper is toned and some colors have faded which, in some areas, creates the illusion of staining, there is some foxing. Period frame with wood backing. - Approximately 29-inches x 23-inches framed, view area approximately 23 ½-inches x 17 ½-inches.

The large chalkboard painted green centering gilt letting above and three smaller chalkboards beneath. The chalkboards are painted wood; sign is molded...great color and patina. A wonderful double-sided trade sign remaining in first paint.
The spread winged eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch with its talons holds a string in its mouth from which is hung the American shield. The pine board with applied molding is surrounded by a sheet-iron strap; hand forged mounting bolts remain intact. (28.25 x 40.5 x 4 inches.)

Circa 1850

This group demonstrates great age as evidenced by then primitive fashioning, tool marks and spacing of drilled number holes. The red and black pigment used to fill holes is long gone. Probably made shipboard by a sailor during leisure time- playing cards was an important and enjoyable pastime aboard ship. Each piece measures 1 3/16 by .5 by 3/8-inches.
