Top Quality American Kentucky Percussion Pistol
Silver and gold mounted...handmade trigger guard and inlays
Probably from the Philadelphia area
Circa 1840-1865
An unsigned, .44 caliber American Kentucky pistol with a 6.375-inch iron octagon barrel. The gun itself is 10.5-inches in overall length. All silver furniture, the bag grip is nicely checkered and the wood has a terrific grain, color and patina. The butt cap, thumb piece and fore end cap are the only non-engraved silver parts on gun. The barrel has 3 gold barrel bands with plain border engraving on the rear flats. The lock plate is nicely engraved as is the hammer; the iron tang is engraved as well as both ramrod ferrules, both barrel escutcheons, the large fancy side plate, trigger plate, square-back faceted trigger guard and front-strap extension. All are engraved in a primitive American high-quality style. The gun has a single set trigger, and the hammer has a very stylish, low pattern. The side plate is false, showing an engraved faux lock screw. The lock plate is held by an engraved screw on right side directly into the breech. The metal surfaces are undisturbed and are a blue/gray mixed with silver/gray finish. The only flaws are a tight un-repaired crack in the left fore end, a silver pin is missing. Mentioned for accuracy...the front rammer ferrule is partially unsoldered from the rib; it remains secure and tight. Of the two examples of this pistol known, neither is signed.
The pistol is published on page 65 of Steel Canvas The Art Of American Arms by R.L. Wilson.
