R. & J. D. Johnson
Model 1816 Type III Musket
Great color and original condition
Scarcely encountered, original flintlock...
Luther Sage inspectors marks, side of stock, barrel top and butt-plate - SOLD

Lock marked w/ eagle "U.S" above and "JOHNSON" off center below as well as "1831" and "MIDDN CONN" vertically in an arc behind hammer. The 42-inch, .72 caliber barrel is marked "US / LS / P / V" with 1831 on tang. Solid walnut stock has inspector's marks (LS?) near side plate and above butt plate tang. Barrel and iron mountings were original browned on this vintage model, rather than arsenal bright. Approximately 57.5-inches overall. The M1816 was the last martial flintlock to be produced; most Type III models were converted to percussion making "...flintlock specimens scarce, if not rare..." according to Norman Flayderman's Guide to Antique Firearms and Their Values. It is believed that R. & J. D. Johnson produced 600 between 1831-1834.
