PHILADELPHIA TEAPOT
Molded Yellow Ware
Attributed to Thomas Haig
Circa 1840-1850



Rare yellow ware molded teapot with flint enameled glaze attributed to Thomas Haig, Philadelphia, circa 1840-50. The lid has a very old repair to one corner; hairline around circumference of base with four very old staples otherwise fine and very attractive.
Haig worked in both stoneware and earthenware (redware & yellow ware) but little has been identified. See Myers, Handcraft to Industry Philadelphia Ceramics in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century (1980) for in-depth discussion. The mold for this teapot is in the Mercer Museum, Doylestown, PA. (Height: 7.5-inches.)

The cabin is decorated with various animals, birds, buttons and a paper American flag, dated 1831. Very good condition, with a chip on the roof, noted for accuracy. Measures 7.25-inches in height and 5.5-inches in width and depth.

Carved Hanging Match Holder

A match holder that consists of a one-piece barrel shape on flat back. Very good condition; the paint is a little worn around the rim. Measures 3.75-inches in height, 2.5-inches in width and 2.75-inches in depth.

This wax jack has a snuffer, ball feet and a gadrooned base. Very good condition. Measures 5.25-inches in height, 2.5-inches in width and 2.75-inches in depth.

Group of Four Delft Tiles



The tiles are decorated with mounted cavaliers and horns. One tile is marked "4/ 5 (or S) /W/ 10" in blue on reverse. Expected chipping is found along the edges the tiles. Each tile measures 5-inches square.

The box is painted olive green, with a gilt stencil decoration of grapes on the lid and brass bands. Very good condition. The box measures 11-inches in height, 15.75-inches in width and 11.75-inches in depth.

Fancy Paint Decorated Medium-Size Box

The box is of dovetail construction; rectangular top over conforming case. The lid is received by competently chamfered and mitered interior moldings. Putty-rolled paint decoration...full coverage decoration consisting of, half and quarter-roundels along with other rolled techniques. The box remains in very good original condition including iron lock and brass hinges. Paint is full coverage and remains bright; top will benefit from a good cleaning...all yellow ground intact with faded red decoration. (Height: 8-inches; width: 17.75-inches; depth: 9.25-inches.)
