FAMILY REGISTER
Watercolor on paper
Washburn Family
Newton, Massachusetts
By Martha Ann Washburn (1825-1918)
March of 1841

Family Register is written in Gothic lettering at the top over a banner commemorating the marriage of Joshua Washburn and Sylvia Mosman in April, 1824, also recorded are the births and deaths of the seven brothers and sisters of Martha, and rather unusually, even her death has been recorded. The paper is toned and has some light water stains at the bottom, no tears, holes or repairs. The note at the bottom indicating the register was created by Martha Ann Washburn was clearly added long ago. Mounted within an ebonized frame with beading. (20 ¼-inches x 15 ¼-inches, 22 ½-inches x 17 ½-inches framed.)

Basket Of Fruit With Bird And Butterfly
Watercolor on cotton velvet
Artist Unidentified
American
Circa 1825

The artist's fanciful style creates a lifelike composition. The overflowing basket floats above the table-matt with its bounty of grapes, foliage and flowing tendrils mixed with other fruits and berries...some exotic such as the banana.
The darkened edges and bold colors create a three-dimensional illusion of depth. Notice the improbable angle in which the bird clutching a branch is positioned. The work is mounted within a period gilt frame that measures 21 by 19.5-inches.
Price: $4,575
