Daniel B. Lorah's Farm

Oil On Canvas
Pennsylvania
Circa 1870 - SOLD

The artist was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States at the age of 40. Between 1865 and 1881 he painted a number of highly detailed large landscape views, which he painted during periods of commitment for intemperance. The artist is known for his highly prized and much sought after depictions of alms houses in Berks, Montgomery and Schuylkill Counties of Pennsylvania.
Typical of Hoffman's works there is significant re-touch following the craquelure pattern throughout. (The artist canvas preparation there is thin over-paint over a now restored long "L" shaped tear along the right side; the tear ran horizontally and vertically.

Chicago Firearms "Protector" Palm Pistol - SOLD

This example with serial number 12685 on all plate chambers and case is .32 caliber extra short rim fire and is nickel plated with mother of pearl side plates; excellent condition overall. Peter Finnegan of Austin, Illinois purchased the patent rights for the Protector Palm pistol from the Minneapolis Firearms Co in 1892 in order to institute design improvements to make the gun more reliable. He formed a new company, The Chicago Firearms Co. The improved pistol was slightly larger, the safety functioned better and the side plate was more secure. In addition, the entire gun was a little bit sturdier. He contracted with Ames Sword Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass. to manufacture the weapons and deliver them to him in time for the opening of the Columbian Exhibition (The Chicago World's Fair of 1892). Ames defaulted and did not deliver until after the Exhibition had closed and even then, only a small percentage of the contract. Finnegan sued Ames, eventually winning cash settlement with the Ames Sword Company becoming the owner of 13,000 Protector Palm pistols, which they sold from 1894 through 1910 although the guns themselves were all made prior to 1898.

An About Impossible to Assemble
Set of Eight Queen Anne Side Chairs
Boston, walnut
Circa 1760

The ex-owner of this remarkable group of chairs assembled them during a 30-year period; remarkably they are all stylistically all inspired by the same shop traditions. The yoke back and shaped stiles centered by vasiform splat received by the molded lower-splat shoe above trapezoidal slip seats. The front legs are of cabriole form with turned pad feet while the raking rear legs are turned and block/square with nicely molded edges. One upholstered seat frame is new with all others being original to individual chair; each chair is of congruent color and surface patina...obviously with slight differences that are not noticed when circling the table. Each chair measures 40-inches in height; seat heights: 17-inches; front width: 19.75-inches.

Fraktur
Attributed to Samuel Bentz (1792-1850)
The Mount Pleasant Artist (Lancaster County, PA)
Inscribed for "Amos Good / [son of Henry Good. / and his Wife Ann. / a born Stirk] was born / february 8th in the year / of our Lord 1836."

Although only one signed work by Samuel Bentz is known, his singular style is a signature in its own right. Frequently used favorite motifs are red and black spheres surmounting stylized urns or plinths and heavy use of brown, tan, orange and black; frequently, Bentz also added a clock to his birth records. Other notable features of Bentz's Fraktur are limited text and enclosing parent's names within brackets.
The paper is toned and lightly creased...colors and pen work remain quite vivid.
Not distracting but must be noted; barely visible 1.75-inch vertical crack in outermost section of name block with other partial paper cracks within creases that have been professionally stabilized and do not distract. (Sight size: 7 3/8 x 9.25-inches.)
Price: $21,500
