Traveling Lantern Alarm Clock

This small British timepiece with arch dial and applied Rocco spandrels centered by a silvered disk engraved with makers name within the arch. The face, also with lovely cast Rocco spandrels surrounding the engraved and enameled chapter ring that frames the dial center which is decorated by a double quietly elegant trailing vines and foliate engraving in the center of which is the alarm setting disk. This clock is sold with a hanging shelf of undetermined age; for display and use as depicted. Mechanically fine and having a height of 8.5-inches.

Probably eastern Massachusetts or Connecticut, carved oak with yellow pine lid and bottom tabletop box.
The rectangular lid hung from original pintle-hinges has notched side borders and is scratch-molded. The lid is fitted to a conforming case with notched front corners on a molded base. Original lockplate remains intact; nice old color with good patina. (Height: 8 inches; Case Width: 17.25 inches; Case Depth: 13.5 inches.)

The top with molded edge above a double-arch molded case fitted with two short drawers above four long drawers raised on a molded base with ball feet. The top and sides retain a dry mustard/brown painted surface dating to the early 19th century; the drawer fronts and moldings are of a dark old maple color...original backboards; replaced feet and brasses. This work depicting roses in vase within a meandering floral border is signed George C. Hale 1830 (possibly George C. Hale - b. 1805 in Tennessee - d. 1880 in Arkansas, married Margaret Peggy Thompson (1814 - 1879) in Alabama in 1833); is worked in pink, green, blues and yellow. The piece is mounted in a period, possibly original, painted wood frame with beveled mat. As expected, the paper is toned; minor losses and a tight tear within upper left margin as depicted. (10.5-inches x 8-inches view, 14-inches x 11-inches framed.)

Youth's Fancy Windsor Side-Chair

Circa 1810-1820 - SOLD

Stylistically a very different piece of seating furniture, perhaps inspired by Baltimore tradition, yet with Pennsylvania elements; architecturally interesting-perhaps unique. The tablet-centered crest joining incised knop turned stiles having finials consisting of multiple ring-turned bands forming ball-like finials centering five bamboo and crease turned spindles; the center spindle with medallion. The round cornered rectangular seat is dished and has an ornamental seat projection at front center; seats are raised on legs with ring turned bands under seat, down-weighted incised baluster above reverse baluster terminating with a knop above a small turned foot. The legs are joined by a delicate turned box stretcher. The chair is fancy grain painted in a style often found on central Pennsylvania pieces. The decorated surface is early and is found over original green paint. Other than typical paint losses the chair remains in great condition. (Height: 29.75 inches; seat height: 14 inches; width: 13.5 inches; depth: 14.75 inches.)

The lid with applied molding hung from original shaped strap hinges above the dovetailed case with horizontal applied molding centered by two short drawers having overhanging thumb-molded edges and original brasses. The drawers are flanked by fluted panels. The flat bittersweet paint is original and has slightly darker subtle flourishes; full coverage with nary any wear...fine condition with good oxidation and patina. The case raised on turned feet. (Width: 49.75-inches; height: 26-inches; depth: 23-inches.)

There is professional restoration to the cover and pot.

As depicted, each panel in ancient oyster-white paint that appears to be over a soft blue paint that was very popular during the eighteenth century. The only traces of blue are in areas originally under muntins that are now exposed due to two-hundred years of shrinkage. It is possible that the original pigment was fugitive; the paint now changed by light and chemistry to that which is depicted.
Nonetheless, a thin layer of paint on nicely compartmentalized and molded sections that are perfect for decorating. 1) 83.5 x 47.5 inches; 2) 83.5 x 13 inches; 3) 51.5 x 22.5 inches.

Gentleman With Book

A classic example of Ware's hand in fine original condition including the frame. The artists body of work is limited to approximately 41 portraits; he died at the age of 23. In only a very few instances are the hands shown; when they are depicted it is usually with a book or eyeglasses. This three-quarter view all but fills the panel and exhibits Ware's formula; wide-eyed, hard edged, large ears and heavy shading along the nose. Also, a deep shaded depression between the upper lip and nose and the subject is positioned against a dark ground; in this case, reddish-brown with black shadow. (21 by 25-inches.)

Although we rarely encounter early racks...it is known that they were quite common during the period. Guests entering American homes would be expected to leave their coat, hat and cane on the rack in the front hall. This splendid example is more developed in its turnings than most. Note the acorn atop urn finial above ring, reel, and baluster and barrel turnings...all above the ring turned tapered lower column raised on spider legs. The twelve long pegs with ball and ring terminus are beautifully executed and are all without compromise. Original red stain; great patina. Height: 81-inches.

The top-rail with eight spindles above the arm rail having nicely turned arm supports and out-swept shaped handholds. The seat is wonderfully carved and shaped; raised on nicely turned splayed legs joined by the "H" stretcher. This example enjoys generous proportions and is accommodating and comfortable. (Height: 38.75 inches; seat height: 16.75 inches; width: 20.25 inches; depth: 14.75 inches.) Fine condition.
