Highboy, Dunlap, Carved
Bedford, New Hampshire
Circa 1765 to 1775
Tiger maple and white pine, original brasses
Attributed to John and Samuel Dunlap featuring stop-fluted shell-carved central drawer in lower case; the upper case displays distinctive Dunlap shop cornice. The lower case enjoys a particularly successful skirt; cyma scrolling and blocked; legs with creased knees, out-swept cabriole legs ending in pad feet with intact under pads. The extreme attention to joinery detail, the wooden pins securing drawer bottoms and drawer guides to case sides; partial use of pins securing cornice and waist moldings and well chosen primary and secondary woods are typical of Dunlap shop traditions. The piece remains in a very high state of originality with only a small patch to upper left drawer within top case; some returns and drop pendants are possible replacements; repaired age crack to right rear foot with all else fine. (Height: 70-inches; upper case: 36 by 18-inches; lower case: 38.5 by 19.25-inches.)
