Portrait from Life attributed to John Johnston
Minister Simeon Howard (1733-1804)
Rev War Activist
Boston
Advocate for Right to Bear Arms (2nd Amendment)
Oil on canvas - SOLD

Simeon Howard was minister of the West Church, Boston, (1767-1775) and defines the importance of West Church in the events leading to the American Revolutionary War. Howard left briefly in 1775 for Nova Scotia, with many of his parishioners, to avoid British retaliation, but returned after a year and a half. Of significant importance is A Sermon Preached to the Ancient and Honorable Artillery-Company, in Boston, New-England, June 7th, 1773. Being the Anniversary of Their Election of Officers, by Simeon Howard, A.M. Pastor of the West Church in Boston. The sermon is regarded as a call to arms justifying the right to take up arms against an oppressor, and Howard is generally touted as one of the big 3 (Adams, Howard, and Paine) when is comes to precursors, proponents, and justifications for our Second Amendment. In modern times, Howard is often cited in NRA literature on the right to bear arms. Howard is a significant figure to Boston, and in the founding of our country.
The portrait remains in generally excellent condition on original stretcher; lightly cleaned and stabilized. (Frame: 28.25 x 33.25 inches; view: 24.25 x 29.25 inches)

Banjo Clock, Willard
Aaron Willard Jr.
Boston, Massachusetts
A rare alarm patent time piece with gilt rope frames
One of a "handful" extant examples...Circa 1825 - SOLD

This attractive banjo clock features a rare alarm movement with outside bell mounted at the crest. The frames each contain magnificent original painted glass tablets in exceptional condition. The throat glass is exceptional with outstanding and important foliate and scroll motif with fanciful flourishes above a basket of fruit and the word "patent: within a scroll festooned with Rocco style decoration...the red, gold, blue and sepia decoration is all the more forceful against the mustard ground. The lower glass is decorated with the deity Aurora driving a team of winged horses, within a gilt border against the conforming mustard ground. Note the definition of Aurora's face and the incredible detail of the chariot as related to color and fancy ornamentation. The chariot is positioned before a powerful explosion of light rays and roiling clouds as it floats on ethereal clouds that ground the composition.
The movement is signed with a die stamp at the upper right on the front plate "A. Willard Jr / Boston". Very few movements are signed. The case retains a dry surface with fine old patina. Height Overall 32 1/8"
The original brass movement has been serviced and is in good running order. The alarm mechanism has been expertly restored. The alarm hand and weight are replaced with exact copies from original examples. The bell is period but not original to this clock. The original dial has restoration to the infield.

Sheraton Wing Chair
New Hampshire
Circa 1815
Period Sheraton easy chairs are uncommon and desirable...

Considering the Chippendale style serpentine crest rail, this is a relatively early example of a Sheraton easy chair. The tall and slender form is quite desirable; almost a ladies chair. The narrow verticality is accentuated by extremely refined, and tall, delicately turned, tapering birch legs. The castors are original, a very nice feature. The already successful lines will be greatly improved by a competent upholster. (Height: 49 inches; seat height: 17 inches; width: 32.5 inches; depth: 32 inches.)

"SUCCESS TO THE COMMERCE OF NEWBURYPORT"
Large, Outstanding and Rare Liverpool Jug
Newburyport Harbor and the Ship "Massachusetts"

Probably Herculaneum Pottery*
Beneath the spout is a transfer of a woman in classical dress carrying a shield decorated with Stars and Stripes and a branch of laurel, in front of her is an American eagle, and behind her an obelisk with a portrait of Washington. On one side of the jug is a map of "Newburyport Harbour" above a banner reading "SUCCESS TO THE COMMERCE OF NEWBURYPORT" and above are crossed flags, a Liberty cap, spread-winged eagle, and a wreath of laurel. The opposite side features a ship with three masts in full sail and flying American flags above the word "MASSACHUSETTS." The flag above the map and at the stern of the ship bear 15 stars. Beneath the handle is an American eagle and shield under 13 stars. There are also two transfers of a man blowing a bugle and one of a man holding a sextant. There are traces of gilding and sizing throughout, including remnants of a dedication that is, sadly, unreadable. Overall condition is very, very good with a few small chips along the bottom edge, and the tight spiral crazing expected on a period Liverpool jug. (Approximately 12-inches high.) *See Anglo American Ceramics by David and Linda Arman, page 139, plate N3 and page 259.
