Sheldon Peck
Portrait of Hiram A. Adams
oil on panel
New York State
Circa 1830 - SOLD
A young Hiram Adams sits in three quarter pose with a serious expression on his face. He wears a dark blue overcoat that accentuates his broad shoulders with puffed sleeves; shirt with tall standing collar and mail coach knot cravat completes the outfit.
An old label on verso reads: "Hiram Augusta Adams. Born July 13 - 1799, Died November, 18, 1883."
Adams immigrated to Tecumseh, Michigan sometime before the 1850 Federal census; for several decades, his name appears as a machinist and cabinetmaker. His name appears in the 1880 census, three years before his death as a retired merchant. His wife Elizabeth (Eliza) Van Tyne Adams was born in New York and christened in the Dutch Reform Church in Cayuga. Label on verso identifies sitter and date.
There is small scattered retouch to some tight craquelure that we mention for accuracy...all else fine. There is 1 x 1-inch area on his left shoulder and a 1 x 2-inch area on his left chest. Craquelure retouch to an area approximately 4 x 4-inches in the background above his right shoulder. Very small areas of craquelure retouch in his hair. There are two additional areas, 2 x 2-inches each, of craquelure retouch to the left and right of his top coat button. Again, these filled areas are confined to tight craquelure. The work is mounted in an early black frame with gold stenciled decoration. (25.25-inches by 20 1/8 inches.)

William & Mary Cherry Turned

Rhode Island
Literature: Published in 1 American Furniture,
2005 edition, page 15; figure 33. Article titled,
Early Rhode Island Turning by Erik Gronning
and Dennis Carr.
- SOLD
The overhanging oval drop-leaf top with tongue and groove joint between top board and leaves projects above a skirt with no drawer; two gates support those leaves. Robust turned elements are found on the gates, legs, and stretchers.
1 The stationary legs have symmetrical balusters separated by a thin "V" shaped torus molding; thus the mass of the turning is located at the center rater than at the bottom. The legs are joined by a stretcher that is equally robust in its turning; table is raised on turned feet that have been expertly restored. The hinges appear to be very old replacements, the lower rail beneath drawer front is replaced and the drawer is missing-otherwise all else excellent. Dry surface with great patina and color; may be original surface history. (Height: 28.5-inches; width 42-inches; depth: 54-inches.)
