Outstanding Decorated Dome-Top Trunk
New England
Circa 1820



Decorated with brushed arches of red paint then evenly spattered creating a dramatic effect. The box retains original iron hardware and is clean throughout.
Height: 7 inches; width: 16.5 inches; depth: 8.5 inches.

Paint Decorated Dome-Top Box

The slightly domed rectangular lid is received by moldings applied to the interior of the box; simple lapped construction. Black on red decoration atop of which is bronze powder stenciling; centering the top is a large lyre surmounted by crown-like rays flanked either side by columns on plinths with large orb finials joined by rows or rectangles that probably represent bricks. The sides are similarly decorated with smaller congruent stenciling. The arched end panels of lid are stenciled H.S. Warner Pike; front stenciled with saw-tooth design on lid; front panel with decorative pattern...diamonds alternating with eight tiny squares within rectangle as depicted. The box and paint remain in very good original condition with only as expected wear; lock hasp is missing. (Height: 8 inches; width: 19.75 inches; depth: 8.5 inches.)

Approximately 22-inches l x 10-inches h x 12-inches w. Grain painted with slight dome top, basswood box; "NFM" painted in yellow on top of lid; iron lock painted black, brass keyhole cover; no paint on back side; interior very clean; solid w/ expected dents and scratches throughout. Known owner with family history available. VT origin.

The domed top over a conforming case with wire handles, iron hinges, and iron lock; interior with early 20th century wallpaper. It's all about the decoration...a kaleidoscope of fancy paint decoration...green painted scumbled against yellow in quarter and full-round designs. The entire surface is ornamented with putty rolled decoration. The lid displays some red paint.

As depicted, the characteristically feathered black and green trees painted against a salmon ground now faded to tan. In generally excellent condition with minor losses and imperfections. A similarly decorated box is found within Sotheby's-The Howard and Jean Lipman Collection of Important American Folk Art and painted Furniture...The Property of the Museum of American Folk Art, lot 97.
